What is the Third Order Secular?

The Third Order Secular was established just as long ago as the Franciscan Order itself, around the year 1221. St. Francis himself founded the Third Order Secular for those individuals striving for holiness in the world and without obligation to vows under pain of sin. The object is to imitate the life of St. Francis in conformity with Our Lord Jesus Christ in poverty and humility. The Third Order adapts to the human frailties and circumstances of life and obliges its members to follow a rule to keep them on the narrow path of salvation.

Duties and the Rule of the Third Order Secular Members can be found in the Document labeled: “Pope Leo XIII: Rule of the Third Order of St. Francis” located in the submenu under “Third Order Resources” on this website.
